Experimental therapies and a vaccine would complement traditional control measures, speeding containment. But those dreams have run up against a harsh reality in the North Kivu Ebola outbreak. The second largest ever, this outbreak’s setting — in a densely populated, conflict-ridden region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo — has served up setback after setback and turned Ebola response workers into targets.
