This trip will take you to Grenoble, located in the heart of the French Alps. Grenoble is renowned for its international research centres devoted to the exploration of living matter and materials. You will visit the amazing ice core library of the Institute for Geosciences and Environmental research (IGE), a laboratory affiliated to CNRS and partners, which boasts a collection of 15,000samples and several kilometres of ice cores: some very recent, others 800,000 years old, and coming from the Alps, Antarctica, the Artic and the Andes. These cores hold a wealth of information about past changes in climate, the environment and the atmospheric composition. Leading climate scientists will be there to present their work and new projects, and to answer questions.

Grenoble is also home to the European Photon & Neutron Science Campus. The afternoon will be dedicated to this international science hub, which welcomes over 10,000 scientists from all over the world each year and hosts three major international research institutes: The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), the Institute Laue-Langevin (ILL) and the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF), which will consolidate and enlarge its pioneering role in X-ray science by becoming, in 2020, the world’s first high-energy, fourth-generation synchrotron light source.
