University of Stuttgart (Germany)

Jonas Kuhn

Jonas Kuhn is Professor of Computational Linguistics at the University of Stuttgart. He did undergraduate and graduate studies in Stuttgart and Edinburgh and a post-doc at Stanford University (2001/02). He then held an assistant professorship at the University of Texas at Austin and led a junior research group at Saarland University, Germany, before taking up a full professorship at the University of Potsdam, Germany, in 2006 and moving on to his current position at the Institute for Natural Language Processing (IMS) in Stuttgart in 2010. Since 2016 he is also the director of the Center for Reflected Text Analytics (CRETA) in Stuttgart. Kuhn and his research group work on models and tools for text analysis and text generation. Recent advances in machine learning make the training of purpose-specific models on collections of text data comparatively easy from a technical perspective. One of Kuhn's current methodological interests lies in the question what it takes to make the use of such models effective within higher-level workflows, for instance in the field of Digital Humanities and Computational Social Science: how to best take advantage of the expertise that the potential tool users bring to the table in such contexts?
